The battery is the single most consequential component in an electric vehicle. It sets the range, much of the weight, and a good deal of the cost.
Range and weight
Lithium-ion packs store considerably more energy per kilogram than the lead-acid batteries they replaced. That is what makes a 50-mile range possible on a vehicle light enough to handle easily.
Lifespan
A well-managed lithium-ion pack lasts for many hundreds of charge cycles. Over the life of the vehicle that is a meaningful difference in both cost and waste.
